FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. DO I NEED LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR MY MATTER?

A. Technically, you can represent yourself. In recent years the number of individuals choosing to self-represent (pro-se) has dramatically increased. I think the more appropriate question is, should you? The long-term disadvantages far outweigh any immediate benefit.

Most people represent themselves because they feel they cannot afford an Attorney. While it is a reality that not everyone can afford one, it is important to meet with an attorney to determine your options.

Here at Kalouris Law Firm we strive to offer everyone a legal option that works for them.

We have had many clients who come to us to late and the damage of their self-representation is already done. It takes a long time to repair and make changes… which costs money. The only thing you can gain from meeting with an attorney is knowledge and in the legal arena knowledge is power.

BEWARE: If you represent yourself the Judge will not allow you to come back and use the lack of attorney representation as a reason to modify a Judgment that is not in your favor. You will be held to the same standards as any attorney.

Q. IS KALOURIS LAW FIRM THE RIGHT LAW FIRM FOR ME?

Q. WILL I HAVE TO GO TO COURT?

A. Not necessarily. One of the main reasons to hire an attorney is so that they may appear on your behalf and represent your interests throughout the process. While the majority of cases settle before going to trial, there are certain situations such as hearings where you would be required to appear. In the instance where we do go to trial we have extensive trial experience and will prepare you, so that you may appear with confidence.

Q. WHO WILL MAKE THE DECISION ABOUT ACCEPTING A SETTLEMENT OR MOVING FORWARD TO TRIAL?

A. While we are here to offer legal advice and counsel we strongly believe that the client should be fully informed and in control their matter. Thus, the decision on when to settle or not is the clients.

That does not mean that we do not give our clients the benefit of our advice. Keeping the client informed is our top priority so that they make the best possible decision for themselves, their business, and/or their family.

Q. WHAT IF I AM NOT HAPPY WITH MY CURRENT REPRESENTATION?

A. As a client you always have the right to switch attorneys and choose who represents you. Read over your contract to see if there are specific instructions on how to end your attorney-client relationship with current attorney. If you are in the middle of the case, the Judge will need to give your current attorney permission withdraw.
